Sauna bathing is already a deeply therapeutic practice, offering benefits for relaxation, circulation, detoxification, and overall well-being. But when you introduce aromatherapy and halotherapy, the experience is taken to a whole new level. Essential oils and natural plant extracts amplify the sauna’s healing power, while salt therapy enhances respiratory function and skin health, creating a truly immersive ritual.
The Benefits of Aromatherapy in the Sauna
Aromatherapy is all about harnessing the natural properties of plants to support physical and mental well-being. When combined with the heat and humidity of a sauna, essential oils work even more effectively. Here’s what they bring to the table:
Deep Relaxation – Lavender, chamomile, and sandalwood help melt away stress and tension.
Clearer Breathing – Eucalyptus, pine, and peppermint open up the airways and support lung health.
Detoxification Boost – Lemon, rosemary, and juniper enhance the body’s natural detox process.
Mood Elevation – Citrus oils like orange and bergamot uplift the spirit, while grounding scents like cedarwood and frankincense bring balance.
Better Circulation & Muscle Relief – Warming oils like ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper help with circulation and ease muscle aches.
The Power of Halotherapy (Salt Therapy) in the Sauna
Halotherapy, or dry salt therapy, involves inhaling microscopic salt particles that provide numerous health benefits. When incorporated into the sauna, it complements aromatherapy beautifully by:
Clearing the Respiratory System – Salt particles help break down mucus, reduce inflammation, and improve breathing, making it especially beneficial for asthma, allergies, and sinus issues.
Supporting Skin Health – Salt has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which can soothe skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne.
Boosting Detoxification – Just like essential oils, salt aids the body’s ability to detox by pulling out impurities and reducing inflammation.
Enhancing Relaxation & Stress Relief – The negative ions released by salt contribute to a sense of calm, reducing stress and enhancing overall mood.
How to Use Aromatherapy & Halotherapy in the Sauna
There are a few simple and effective ways to introduce essential oils and salt therapy into your sauna session:
1. Add oils to water for aromatic infusion
Mix a few drops of essential oil into a bucket of water and ladle it onto the sauna stones. The heat transforms it into fragrant löyly, filling the space with therapeutic aromas. (Tip: Never pour undiluted essential oils directly onto the stones—they’re highly concentrated and can burn or produce an overpowering scent.)
2.Add oils to a ball of crushed ice and create convection
More commonly referred to as Aufguss, a german word for infusion, adding the essential oils to ice creates a long-lasting aroma. Ice-balls can be formed using a bespoke utensil or even two small bowls, half coconut shells work great. Once the ball is made, add 5-6 drops of oil and then drop the ice-ball on the rocks, adding a ladle or two of water to get it going. (Tip: Be mindful of rising heat, and always begin pouring water furthest away and drawing the hand back towards yourself, rather than moving hand outwards into the direction of the rising steam.)
3.Add oils to coarse sea-salt and offer halotherapy for each bather
With two bowls, one containing the salt infusion and the other empty, begin by pouring the salt from one bowl to the other, creating distance between the bowls as you pour, producing long streams of salt as you pass the contents back and forth - similar to the practice of 'tea-pulling' where hot tea is transferred dramatically from one vessel to another at a considerable distance. As you pass the salt from one to another, the aromas will be released and spread throughout the sauna. Performing this short ritual in front of each bather will intensify the aroma for them whilst offering halotherapy benefits also. Move around the group until all the bathers have experienced the process. (Tip: This is a great tool to use if you do not wish to use infused water on the rocks.)
4.Use the Birch infused water produced after soaking the whisks
A personal favourite, using the Birch infusion offers a natural and truly organic aromatherapy in the sauna. The aroma is earthy and grounding and has it's own unique quality. It's the smell of the forest, of nature, of the deeply revered birch that sauna would not be the same without. Not only that, but the saponins from birch act as natural bronco-dialators, meaning they natural encourage opening of the airways making this aromatic tool excellent for lung health! (Tip: Always save your BIrch water for sauna rituals! Not only is it great for making löyly, but is a natural soap too, and is also said to remove product build-up from the hair. A gift from the nature gods if ever there was one!
Best Essential Oils for the Sauna
What you choose depends on what you’re looking for:

A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Use High-Quality Oils & Salt – Always go for 100% pure essential oils and natural, unprocessed salt (like Himalayan or Dead Sea salt).
Dilute Properly – Essential oils are potent, so always mix them with water or a carrier oil before using.
Avoid Direct Contact with Heated Surfaces – Never drop oils directly onto sauna stones—they’re flammable!
Check for Sensitivities – If you have allergies or sensitivities, start with a small amount and see how your body reacts.
Stay Hydrated – Both aromatherapy and salt therapy enhance detoxification, so drink plenty of water before and after your sauna session.
